It is not an easy task to choose curtains that will harmoniously fit into the interior, will fully fulfill their functions and emphasize the merits of design. It is best to investigate in advance the most common mistakes you will encounter.
Incorrect amount of consumable
When ordering or purchasing curtains, most consumers are guided simply by the width of the wall on which the window is located. At the same time, they absolutely do not pay attention to the fact that when placing the finished product, it will not go tightly along the cornice, but smoothly lay down in folds, which ultimately significantly reduces the size of the canvas in reality.
IMPORTANT. In this case, the curtains most likely will not “meet” in the center of the window frame, but sunlight or a lantern will constantly pour into the room.
The width of the curtain material should be calculated solely based on the length of the cornice and the type of intended fastening for the finished product. Also, for the correct determination of the amount of the collected web, it is necessary to take into account the coefficient of its assembly.
REFERENCE. When calculating the width of the future curtain, do not forget to add 10 cm on both sides to fold them, especially if you plan to make this decor item yourself.
Density not taken into account
Very often such situations occur: the order of the curtain is completed, the material is selected, the width of the canvas is calculated, the product is ready, ideally suited in size, but in the morning the owners wake up again with the first rays of the sun. It turns out that the decorative window curtain does not fulfill its functional load at all, letting in light, instead of blocking it. Or a completely opposite case – it was conceived to slightly darken the room, but in the end it turned out to be absolute darkness due to too dense material.
In this case, you can follow several paths. For those windows that are oriented towards the shady side, curtains made of lightweight materials will be the best solution. Such as:
ATTENTION. The designer again actively uses linen and thin cotton in natural colors.
At the same time, a Roman blind, tulle, pleated, created from natural materials, it is permissible to attract a solo, not including heavy curtains in the composition.
But if your windows are oriented to the east and south, or there is a bright lantern next to them, there is a reason to give preference to the so-called blackout curtains. They absolutely do not allow either natural or artificial rays to enter the room, which interfere with falling asleep in the evening or sleeping longer in the morning.
IMPORTANT. Day-night roller blinds proved to be the best in this matter.
The length of the curtain, as well as the width, in no case can be calculated solely by the size of the opening. If you focus on the height of the window, then when hanging the finished product, you risk getting an overly short canvas, because you forgot about the cornice. But if you take material with an impressive margin, then the curtain will most likely lie on the floor and collect dust.
You should not be guided in this matter by fashion trends, since in the picture it is certainly beautiful, but when verified by personal experience, it is absolutely non-functional and even unhygienic. The folds on the curtain will have to be constantly straightened so that they have an aesthetic appearance. Long edges will attract the attention of pets who are not averse to lying in them, playing, and at the same time tearing them.
REFERENCE. Overly long curtains are excellent at collecting dust and pet hair.
Measure the length correctly. If you expect that the curtain will go down to the windowsill, then its edge should be 1 cm above it. This will allow the product to move freely. If, according to the design idea, the decorative textiles go beyond the window sill, then its length should overlap the lower part of the window opening by 15 cm. A curtain on the floor looks more presentable if it ends 1 cm above the extreme point. In addition, they do not wear out so quickly.
ATTENTION. To accurately calculate the required length of the curtain, measure the distance from the eaves (railing) to the desired position at the bottom.
Full wall curtains
Such a decision is fundamentally wrong, since in this case the curtains themselves begin to look like a textile wall, especially when closed. A clear border will be more comfortable to look at.
In this situation, it is recommended to replace curtains and tulle with ones that are not much larger than the width of the window opening. This will help to significantly save on material. And the fact that a part of the wall will be visible is absolutely not scary.
IMPORTANT. Wide curtains are only good for panoramic windows.
Lots of tulle
The most common design of a window opening looks like this: tulle and 2 curtains on the sides. But such a solution in some cases causes inconvenience, such as:
- the need for washing;
- additional expenses for the material.
Tulle collects more dust and turns gray very quickly. In addition, the appearance may not change for the better if they cover the heating radiator. And if you arrange airing, then a light tulle flutters inside the room, provoking pets and touching the surrounding objects.
One of the options for playing up the mistake is to completely abandon the tulle. This action will add more light to the apartment and reduce the amount of dust. In addition, it is quite acceptable to replace lightweight material with more comfortable roller blinds or roman blinds.
REFERENCE. This type of decorative textiles can be an independent design element or act in tandem with curtains.
Most often, a lot of mistakes arise when choosing the correct color scheme for curtains. After all, if you make a mistake with the color, the holistic perception of the entire interior of the room will be completely violated.
The simplest solution is to focus on the shade of the walls of the room. To prevent the curtains from merging with them, just match the color one shade darker or lighter. If there are patterned wallpapers on the walls, then plain textiles are best suited in this case. Conversely, it is better to dilute single-colored walls with ornamented storms.
ATTENTION. Another great option is to match the curtains to the upholstery. The same principle works as with wallpaper.
The second safe option is to match curtains to the upholstery. The principle is the same as with wallpaper.
When choosing curtain material, do not get lost in the variety of prints and ornaments. And first of all, pay attention to how the future curtain will sound in the already finished interior. Too pretentious textiles will draw all the attention and become not an accent, but a vulgar stain.
If the upholstery of the furniture and the walls are monochromatic, then it is permissible to choose curtains with a large and rich pattern, but only on the condition that the room where they will be located is spacious enough. At the same time, the tulle and cornice should be simple and not pretentious.
IMPORTANT. In a window composition, only one element can be active, all the others must “obey” it.
